Matt Atherton

Position : Defender

With a then club record 276 appearances under his belt, modern-day Linnets legend Matt returned to the Millbank Linnets Stadium in September 2017 - after little more than a season away - to extend the mark beyond 300.

He was back for a third spell after being at Ramsbottom United and Clitheroe.

A hugely-popular player at Runcorn, Matt started his career at West Lancashire League side Euxton Villa and in 2007, joined Welsh Premier League team Connah's Quay Nomads, where he scored on his debut.

He made the switch to Runcorn Linnets in 2010 but after a brief stay, joined Clitheroe for the first time in August 2011 and later represented Bamber Bridge.

He returned to the Millbank in 2012 and went on to become the first player to make 250 senior appearances for the club. Having first made his name as a winger, Matt has also played as a central striker and even in an emergency goalkeeping role but he has more recently switched his attentions to defence.

After converting to the left-back role, Matt ended our Hallmark Security League Premier Division title campaign in central defence.

His teaching career as a deputy head prompted time to be called on Matt's involvement at The Millbank (for a return to his local club Euxton as a player-coach).

But Matt signed forms for us on the eve of the 2018-19 season to help out as a dual-registered player.

This gave him chance to build on a grand total of 312 appearances and 60 goals for Linnets.

Runcorn Linnets would like to thank AGQS Ltd. who have kindly sponsored Matt Atherton.
