Linnets toil for victory at Ashton Town

Runcorn Linnets were made to work hard for a second victory of pre-season as they were limited to a one-goal margin at Ashton Town.

Linnets had to wait until beyond halfway in the second half of a largely uneventful contest to edge in front.

A surging run by the triallist No.6, who has featured prominently in all four warm-up matches so far, was climaxed by a confident finish.

Two former Linnets, Adam Jones and Chris Lomax featured for the North West Counties League Division One North hosts, managed by another former Murdishaw favourite Kev Towey.

Meanwhile Runcorn newboy Elliot Morris, after a half-time introduction on the right wing, found himself in direct competition with his brother Adam, who plays at left back for Ashton.

Chances were at a premium for both sides. Harry McGee came closest to a Linnets goal before half-time.

His effort was ill advisedly left by Ashton's 'keeper and it almost sneaked in - bouncing the wrong side of a post.

McGee was later forced off by injury, although there didn't appear to be any concern that it was anything more than a knock.

In tne second half, Lewis Buckley was presented with a great chance to score his maiden Runcorn goal.

But the hometown striker couldn't capitalise on an Ashton defensive error, two resulting attempts being blocked.

As in last Tuesday's win at Euxton Villa, Linnets had started with only four recognised players before strengthening for the second 45 minutes,

With just two more fixtures to follow before the campaign begins in earnest, decisions will soon need to be taken on those hopefuls, who are still vying for a place in Michael Ellison's 2026-27 squad.
