Death of long-serving Supporters Club secretary and champion Linnets fundraiser Sue Bell

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sue Bell.

Sue was one of the best-known characters at Runcorn Linnets and Runcorn AFC before it.

She had fundraised for the Linnets over many decades, sharing the maxim adopted by her late husband, Noel (pictured here with Sue) that "It is not what the club can do for me but what I can do for the club."

Sue was one of the first people supporters would see after coming through the turnstile on matchdays.

She would greet them with a cheery hello and welcome the donation of any loose change for her legendary bucket collection.

This was in aid of Runcorn Football Supporters Club, of which she was the long-time secretary, and would in due course be passed on to the football club.

The fans organisation had been the lifeblood of the original club.

Sue helped to carry on the tradition on our rebirth as Runcorn Linnets and at the meeting in the spring of 2006, which led to our formation as a fans-owned organisation, she sold raffle tickets to begin the process of generating cash to support our activities.

Her appetite for raising funds never waned, her efforts being largely undertaken in memory of Noel, who had been Supporters Club chairman.

At our end-of-season presentation evenings, Sue gave out an award bearing his name and recognising groups and individuals, who have made a significant contribution to the club.

Noel and Sue had been an integral part of the social club scene in Canal Street days, with Noel serving as its concert secretary.

Particularly memorable were the "Oompah Nights" they organised, the couple typically entering into the spirit by donning traditional German costume.

Although she became synonymous with the Yellow and Green of Runcorn and part of the fabric of the modern-day Linnets, Sue had grown up in Northwich.

She would often tell people that she was originally a "Wittoner" on account of her early days living on the doorstep of Witton Albion FC, who were then located in the centre of town.

Sue admitted to knowing very little, if anything, about football but formed an unbreakable allegiance to Runcorn and the Linnets. She always enjoyed being part of our footballing family.

Sue's last appearance at the APEC Taxis Stadium was a few short weeks ago.

It is hard to imagine that someone who was always close at hand will no longer be around. But she will always be with us.

Thank you, Sue for all that you did for the Linnets over the years and may you rest in peace.
